Sometimes the benefit of having a show site for our log cabins, Sheds and Summerhouses in Northampton at Woodmeadow garden centre can also be one of the common reasons for our customers to complain.

Just this weekend I was at the garden centre and a customer had travelled up from London to look at a log cabin, which in the grand scheme of things is not that far as we are centrally located. It means we are a reasonable distance from the majority of major conurbations.

Unfortunately we currently have just two log cabins on display. Partly down to the fact we only moved into the garden centre towards the end of last year and have not had the time to organise the space and more recently the snow and bad weather has slowed us down.

The customer, although disappointed we didn’t have the exact model log cabin that he was looking for, was met with courtesy and a smile.

We demonstrated the quality of the log cabin that he could expect and showed him alternative buildings which we do have on display, including a heavy duty workshop, potting shed, and traditional apex sheds all of which can be delivered and fitted by us, at his house in London.

I was pleased the customer stayed and had a coffee in our garden centre cafe and went away with the peace of mind that we are a genuine company with genuine people, all trying to give our best service and value when making a big purchase. I personally think it is good to see and speak to the people that you are purchasing from.

My biggest frustration is we can’t show every garden building and log cabin we offer.

On our website www.taylorsgardenbuildings.co.uk we have thousands of sheds and Summerhouses including timber garages and greenhouses.

The challenge is to have a representation of both size and quality variation, demonstrating the different quality log cabins that manufacturers offer as well as our own sheds, especially when looking for a bespoke building.

I always refer to Woodmeadow as a developing garden centre. Like most gardens they are never really finished and always being developed. We move product around frequently to keep it fresh and periodically sell display log cabins and sheds to make space for new models.

We are just in the process of building four Elite Greenhouses and soon after will be adding two more Lugarde log cabins and another Tuin log cabin. All good quality and proven selling models, giving you, the customer more to choose from.

Taylors Garden Buildings winter survival tips for our feathered friends.

Snow and ice cover the ground and it becomes impossible for the birds to get to natures food. The ground is so hard that birds that probe for food, like thrushes and lapwings, go without. As for other natural foods like berries, acorns and seeds they become buried.

Birds will visit our gardens more during the cold snaps to seek sanctuary. We can help the bird’s survival in these cold periods by feeding them foods such as worms, fatballs, crushed peanuts, dried fruit and seeds and grain.

Never throw those leftovers away they are needed by our birds. Things like grated cheese, porridge oats, soft fruit, unsalted bacon, cooked rice and pasta and the insides of cooked potatoes are a great winters feed for our feathered friends.

Water is still vital for drinking and bathing. To help prevent your bird bath from freezing over leave twigs or light floating items in the water.

Freezing weather is a potential death sentence for many birds but by feeding the birds in your garden, we can help them survive the winter. Just a thought to provide a little water, food and shelter can be the difference of life or death during the cold months.

Regular feeding, especially in severe weather is essential. if you have a bird table set up, use high calorie seed mixes. Kitchen scraps such as animal fats, grated cheese and porridge oats are great.
Use black sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, sunflower-rich mixes or unsalted peanuts in your hanging feeders.
Fresh water every day is as vital as food. If it is very cold use tepid water but DO NOT use any antifreeze products.
Fruit, such as apples and pears, are loved by blackbirds, song thrushes as well as others of the thrush family.
Help your treecreepers, goldcrests and many other species by rubbing fat in to the bark, alternatively it can be hung like your food bars.
Provide roost sites for the smaller birds with nest boxes, they use them for breeding next year.

Opening dates for Christmas.

To all our dear customers, all of us here at Taylors Garden Buildings wish you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

During the festive season we will still be here to help you with your inquiries even though many of our workshops will be closed for 2 weeks.

The last date for most, but not all orders, to be delivered for Christmas will be the 7th December so please give us call on 01604 586939 so that we can check to see if there is any way we can help on this matter.

All items that have been ordered before this point we will aim to be delivered and installed before Christmas, weather permitting, so if you have any worries please don’t hesitate to call and we will do our utmost to resolve all concerns.

We will be open Christmas Eve, and close for 25th and 26th of December. We will be here for you every day but Sunday, which is the 30th, and will start back on Monday 31st and continue on into the New Year.

So as I have now finished with formalities I would like to leave you all with some fun jokes and Christmas pictures that all of us here in the Taylors Garden Buildings office have enjoyed.

Tidying up your garden for winter.

Take down the shading on your greenhouse

In September, the days start to get shorter and the natural light is a valuable resource. Take down any shading in the greenhouse as this will enable you to introduce the sunlight that is needed for your plants. A good clean with some hot water will leave the glass sparkling clean. Don’t forget gutters where leaves can get trapped, this will help the escape of rain water from the roof of your greenhouse. If you have any broken or damaged glass now is the time to replace this too.

A spring clean for your greenhouse

While you are already cleaning the outside of the greenhouse, lets tackle the inside. This will help reduce wintering pests and diseases. Carefully take out the plants we will need those again in the spring then sweep out all plant debris. A good disinfecting for the greenhouse, paths and staging and don’t forget the inside of the glass too. Use a hot solution of garden disinfectant such as Jeyes Fluid. Thorough ventilation will be needed for your greenhouse over the next couple of days so it dries thoroughly.

Make time over the winter months to keep pots and seed trays clean in preparation for the spring sowing and planting.

Tidy Borders

Pansies, Daisies, and Wallflowers are just some of the plants that can be used to give you colour over the winter months , so dig up your annuals and add them if you can to the compost heap.

Now is the time to get your boarders in order. Remove badly placed plants, and rearrange overcrowded perennials while there is warmth in the soil. Perennials should be 5cm above ground level, but left with rugged pruning so the attractive perennials seed heads can look wonderful, glistening in autumn dew, whilst providing shelter for those wintering insects.

When borders are tidy, put a thick layer of compost or bark chips across them, no need to mix in the worms will l do that for you.

RAKE AWAY THOSE LEAVES

Rake up all leaves and twigs and pop them in to compost pile if you have one. Leaving piles of leaves on the ground can harm your grass. You can however use the leaves for mulch in your garden if you like. If you don’t have a space to compost them yourself, then use your brown bin for garden rubbish so they can be taken away.
