Log Cabin vs Garden Room — Which is Right for Me?

Log Cabin vs Garden Room — Which is Right for Me?

Two of the most popular garden buildings — but very different products

If you're thinking about adding a substantial garden building to your outdoor space, you've probably found yourself weighing up two main options: a garden log cabin, or a fully insulated garden room. Both are beautiful, practical and genuinely transformative — but they suit different needs, budgets and ambitions.

Here's our guide to help you choose with confidence.

What is a Garden Log Cabin?

A log cabin is a timber-framed building constructed from interlocking horizontal logs — typically Nordic spruce or pine — with wall thicknesses ranging from 28mm in entry-level models up to 70mm or more in premium ranges. They're built to last, look stunning in a garden setting, and are significantly more substantial than a standard summerhouse or shed.

Log cabins work brilliantly as:

Home offices (particularly with insulation and electrics added)

       Leisure and hobby rooms

       Garden bars and entertainment spaces

       Gyms and fitness rooms

       Teenage dens and playrooms

Guest accommodation (check local planning rules)

What is an Insulated Garden Room?

A garden room is purpose-built for year-round, habitable use. Where a log cabin is constructed from solid timber logs, a garden room typically uses a structural frame with full cavity insulation, achieving thermal performance closer to a house extension than a garden building. They're usually factory-engineered to precise specifications, clad in contemporary materials, and arrive with electrical systems designed in from the start.

The key difference is thermal performance. A well-insulated garden room is genuinely comfortable in January as well as July — you can run it from a small electric heater and maintain a working temperature regardless of the weather outside.

Key Differences at a Glance

Cost: Log cabins are generally more affordable at entry level. Garden rooms command a premium for their specification and year-round performance.

Insulation: Log cabins can be insulated retrospectively, but garden rooms are built with insulation integral to the structure — it's a significant difference in performance.

Aesthetics: Log cabins have a warm, natural timber look. Garden rooms are typically more architectural and contemporary in appearance.

Customisation: Garden rooms are often fully bespoke. Log cabins come in set sizes but can be adapted.

Installation time: Log cabins can often be self-assembled. Garden rooms are usually installed by specialists.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose a log cabin if: you love the natural timber aesthetic, you're working within a tighter budget, you're happy to add insulation yourself, or you want a versatile space that you can adapt over time.

Choose a garden room if: you need a genuinely year-round usable space without compromise, you're creating a professional home office, you want a building that's completely ready to use from day one, or you're looking to add the maximum value to your property.

Of course, many customers end up finding that a well-specified log cabin — with good wall thickness, added insulation and electrics — gets them most of the way to garden room performance at a lower price point. It's worth having that conversation with us before you decide.
