Timber is a natural material, and that's exactly what makes it beautiful — but it's also what makes it responsive to its environment. Understanding how weather actually affects wood is the first step to keeping your garden building looking good and performing well for decades, not just years.
Why timber moves at all
Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it constantly absorbs and releases moisture depending on the humidity and temperature around it. Even after a tree is felled and the timber is milled, dried, and built into a shed wall, the individual fibres never fully stop responding to their surroundings.
Think of a timber board as being made up of thousands of tiny straws bundled together. When the air is damp, those straws draw in moisture and the wood swells slightly. When the air is hot and dry, moisture is pulled back out and the wood shrinks. This is completely normal and happens to some degree in every timber building, every year. Problems start when that expansion and contraction happens too quickly, too unevenly, or too often.
What extreme heat does to timber
During prolonged hot spells, the moisture in timber evaporates faster than it can be replenished. The outer surface of a board dries out and shrinks while the core of the timber, which is slower to lose moisture, stays relatively larger. That mismatch creates internal tension, and when the tension exceeds what the wood fibres can handle, you get a split — usually running along the grain, often near a knot or joint where the wood was already under stress.
This is precisely the mechanism behind the damage many owners are noticing this summer — weeks on end of high temperatures with little to no rain give timber far less opportunity to reabsorb moisture and recover, so the drying-out and shrinkage effect builds up rather than resetting overnight.
Heat also accelerates the breakdown of any surface treatment. UV exposure degrades the lignin in timber (the natural compound that binds wood fibres together), which is why untreated or poorly maintained wood takes on a grey, silvery appearance over time. That greying isn't just cosmetic — it signals the surface layer is losing its natural protection, leaving the timber underneath more exposed to further damage.
What cold and damp do to timber
Cold weather causes the opposite problem. As temperatures drop and humidity rises, timber absorbs moisture and swells. If that moisture then freezes, it expands further inside the wood's cell structure, which can force fibres apart from the inside. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles — a mild damp day followed by a sharp frost, followed by a thaw — are particularly damaging because the timber is essentially being stretched and released over and over.
This is also when warping tends to show up. If one face of a board (say, the side facing the prevailing wind and rain) absorbs more moisture than the opposite face, it expands more on that side, causing the board to bow or twist. Doors and windows that suddenly stick, or panels that no longer sit flush, are often the first visible signs.
Prolonged extremes vs. sudden swings
Both cause problems, but for different reasons. A long, sustained spell like this summer's heat and drought gives timber no chance to recover — moisture is drawn out day after day with nothing to replenish it, so shrinkage and internal tension simply keep building until something gives.
Sudden swings are damaging for the opposite reason: a heavy downpour followed by blazing sun within 24 hours, or a mild, wet week followed by a hard frost, doesn't give the timber time to adjust gradually. The wood absorbs moisture and expands, then is forced to shrink again almost immediately.

How good construction and treatment reduce the risk
None of this means timber buildings are destined to crack and warp — far from it. It means that specification and maintenance matter enormously. A few things make a measurable difference:
Timber quality and moisture content at build time. Well-seasoned timber that's been dried to an appropriate moisture content before construction is far less likely to move dramatically once it's in place, because it starts closer to equilibrium with the outdoor environment.
Pressure treatment. Timber that's been pressure-treated has preservative forced deep into the wood fibres rather than just sitting on the surface. This offers much more consistent long-term protection against rot and moisture damage than a surface-applied treatment alone, particularly in areas prone to prolonged damp.
Design details. Features like overhanging roofs, adequate ground clearance, and well-fitted joints all reduce how much water timber is exposed to in the first place — and less exposure means less movement.
Ongoing maintenance. This is the one area where owners have the most control. A timber building that's re-treated on a sensible schedule, with joints checked and any small splits caught early, will handle weather swings dramatically better than one that's left untouched for years.
Simple maintenance that makes a real difference
You don't need to be a woodworking expert to protect your garden building — a bit of routine attention goes a long way:
- Re-treat timber every 1–2 years, or as recommended for your specific product, using a quality wood preserver or stain. This replenishes the protective layer that sun and rain gradually wear away.
- Check and clear guttering (if fitted) so water is directed away from the timber rather than running down the walls.
- Look at the roof felt or shingles each autumn and spring — small tears let water sit directly against the timber below.
- Keep an eye on ground contact. Vegetation growing up against a shed wall traps moisture against the timber; a small gap for airflow makes a real difference.
- Address small splits early. A hairline crack treated and monitored is a minor issue. Left unaddressed through several more freeze-thaw or heat-dry cycles, it can widen and let water penetrate deeper into the structure.
