It All Starts With The Base

One of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a new shed is the base on which it is going to stand. Without a decent base at its foundation your shed, summerhouse or garage is at serious risk of developing major structural faults, pretty much as soon as it has been built.

Without a sturdy level base underneath your building will start to lose its shape and develop large cracks and gaps which, besides being unsightly,  jeopardize its weatherproofing and in a worst case scenario can lead to the building collapsing.

This is due to the nature of  the construction which means that as soon as the building has been completed it gradually snuggles itself in to its new surroundings and settles wonkydown. Without a level base it will settle at an odd angle which is where the gaps will start to appear and doors will stop opening properly etc. This also applies to the strength of the base too, even the smallest 6×4 wooden shed has a considerable weight to it and it is essential to use materials in the base that can take the weight of the job, if the base is not strong enough you will again see gaps and jammed windows galore!

We always recommend either a concrete base or paving slabs.  By using one of these you can be confident that your building will remain in shape, be weatherproof and give you many years of trouble free service!

Here is a quick guide on how to lay these two different bases to give you an idea of the job involved and whether you can do it yourself (with someone to help of course) or use an outside party such as a landscape gardener.

For a concrete base you need the following;

  • Building Sand
  • Cement
  • Hardcore
  • Timber
  • Tape Measure
  • Pegs & String
  • Hardcore

Once you’ve picked your location, measure out an area that is 5cm larger than your building on all sides. Remove any vegetation from this area and dig down 6 inches (or less if you want the base to be raised above ground level).

building-shed-base

For the cement to take shape  you will need to measure and cut a timber framework to line the edges. Ensure that this is sitting perfectly flat on the ground and flatten out the entire surface using a spade and rake. Next put down a 3 inch layer of hardcore,  covering generously with sand.

For the concrete you can either mix 1 part cement to 5 parts ballast, or use a pre made dry concrete mix.

  • Slowly add water to the mixture, ensuring that it does not become too sloppy.
  • Spread the concrete evenly into the framework, filling to slightly above the timber.
  • Use another long piece of timber to level off the cement, rest the wood against the framework and move across it in a slow sawing motion to level out all of the concrete.
  • If wet weather is likely cover the base with plastic or tarpaulin for 24 hours.
  • In particularly hot or dry conditions covering with damp sacks and topping up with water occasionally can prevent your base from cracking as it dries.

If you decide to build your shed base using paving slabs instead you’ll need:

  • Flat Face Paving Slabs
  • Building sand
  • Standard cement
  • Rake
  • Standard cement
  • Tape measure
  • Spade
  • Standard cement
  • Pegs and string
  • Rubber mallet

Choose your location carefully and measure out the area for your base as outlined above in the concrete base guide. Dig down to the required depth (about  2.5cm, but differing depending on the thickness of your paving slabs and whether you want a level or raised base).

Next combine one part cement with eight parts building sand to make a dry mixture. this needs to be spread evenly across the base area (about 4cm deep)  and levelled out with a rake. Working out from a corner lay each slab and tap into position using your  mallet, whilst regularly checking the flatness with a spirit level to ensure all slabs are in line with each other.

Installation of paving slabs

Do one last check with a long straight edge, making any adjustments to ensure a perfectly level surface, and brush away any excess sand or cement.

Starting out with a solid, level base will make things much easier when it comes to building your shed, and will protect the building from damp or muddy conditions. Even for relatively simple projects like this it’s vital that you choose the best selection of tools and materials. Our expert advice and comprehensive range of products will save time and ensure that your project runs smoothly.

By using the above as a guide you should be able to successfully create your base and be confident that it is adequate for your buildings needs. However, if DIY is not really your strong point we strongly recommend getting someone in to do the job for you – by doing this you are not only guaranteeing a professional finish but you are also supporting local businesses!

Ready Built Range

One of the most popular ranges on the Taylors website is our Ready Built Shed Range. With 34 categories and over 530 individual items available, this is also our largest with buildings ranging in sizes right up to 24’x14′.

All of the buildings in this range, which also includes Summerhouses and  Pet Houses are manufactured to the highest standard using redwood pine and can be painted a colour of your choice to suit your environment and personality.

Security Apex

Security Apex 6×4

There is a variety of optional extras available to help you personalise your building and make it more secure if need be. If security may be an issue where your shed is to be located, toughened glass is a definite must as it can help deter criminals and other undesirables.

There are also padlocks available with this range to increase security even more.

Heavy Duty Wooden Garage

Heavy Duty Wooden Garage

If you intend using your building for storage of heavier items such as ride on mowers or other such machinery then how about a heavy duty floor? The standard floor that is supplied with these buildings is 12mm which is upgradable to the heavy duty version of 18mm.  Heavy duty felt is another option if your shed / garage is to be located in a position where the elements can be extreme (i.e. windy areas).

Other extras to this range are different door positions and styles (you can go for double doors or stable doors on many models) and also windows that can either be fixed or opened. These doors and windows can also be supplied with decorative antique styled hinges.

Floor Bearers

Floor bearers are highly recommended

A very handy extra with all of these buildings are floor bearers. Floor bearers are basically a framework of wood which go under the building and physically lift it up off of the ground. This allows air to circulate underneath and prevent damp coming up through the floor of your building.  All of the extras are down to the choice of the buyer but we do heartily recommend these bearers as they protect the most vulnerable part of your building – the floor.

Ready Built Shed Range

Ready Built Delivery Zones

The Ready Built range are delivered and built for you on the same day, this is included in the price and applies to anyone living in the green area on the map which appears at the bottom of each listing. There will be an extra charge for anyone in the blue zone but this still represents great value for money.

We have a selection of these buildings on display at our garden centre so the next time you are in the area why not pop in and take a look?

The Results Are In!!

The Results Are In!!

Over the past week or so the team at Taylors have been pondering, discussing and finally voting for our favourite buildings from three of our main categories. Out of our Summerhouses, Log Cabins and Sheds we have finally come to our top three.

Our candidates for the top garden shed were The Supreme Apex, The Rowlinson Potting Shed and The Supreme Workshop…

Our Top Three

The candidates

These were all selected to be in the top three by measuring their value for money, customer feedback, quality and supplier relations and we are pleased to announce that our winner is….

The Supreme Workshop

Supreme Workshop

Our Winner!!

This building claims the best shed crown mainly due to its sturdy construction and versatility which is helped by the double doors which means that this building can be used to store larger items such as ride on mowers and other large garden machinery. That is assuming of course you are using it for storage, it could be used as a workshop or even a games room if you so wished.

Our top three summerhouses in the running for top spot were the Popular Summerhouse, Prima Fifth Avenue and The Denby Summerhouse

The Top Three Summerhouses

Our Top Three Summerhouses

By measuring their value for money, customer feedback, quality and supplier relations as before we are pleased to announce that our winner is….

The Denby Summerhouse

The Denby Summerhouse

The Denby is our champion!

The Denby was a clear winner for us by a substantial margin, this beast of a summerhouse is a real stand out among our range and some of the feedback we have had from our customers shows that you all feel the same about this magnificent building too!

Our final ballot was for our favourite Log Cabin, once again using the same format as the previous two polls, we came up with our winner. Our candidates were the Daniel Log Cabin, The Wolfgang Log Cabin and the Barbeque Hut.

Our Best Log Cabins

A hard choice to make

We struggled a bit with this as we could not reach an agreement straight away between two of them. After a few heated debates and a re-vote we concluded that our winner for best log cabin had to be…

The Daniel Log Cabin

The Daniel Log cabin

Our eventual winner

One of the best sellers in our entire range, not to mention all of our ranges full stop, The Daniel
was chosen due to its sturdy construction. Another factor which influenced the choice was that we use one of these very buildings as an office in our garden centre, you can see it next to the tills by the exit. This cabin has given us many years of good service and we have always been very fond of it!

The final stage of our election was to decide between our three champions and select what we consider to be the best of the best!  We had the impossible task of selecting just one to be the Taylors Garden Buildings champion for summer 2015.

Yet again we deliberated, pondered and generally racked our brains to make the final big decision, after what seemed like an eternity we had to go with a coalition. It was either that or have a mini riot in our office.

Ladies and gentleman, our joint winners for best Taylors Garden Buildings product of summer 2015 are

The Denby and the Daniel

Our two worthy joint winners are, for the purposes of this vote, going to henceforth be known as The Danby-

THE DANBY

The winners!!

Our final vote……

In keeping with the election which has dominated the news over the past few weeks we have been casting votes of our own and electing the top three garden sheds and summerhouses that we sell on our website. Although meant as some light hearted fun, we have come up with three examples of each which have earned their place through factors such as value for money, customer feedback and our experience with the actual manufacturers /suppliers themselves. You can see the results for the summerhouses here and results for the sheds here.

We have now reached our third and final stage of our ballot and are now looking at our top three log cabins.

The three candidates are;

The Daniel Corner Log Cabin

The Wolfgang Log cabin

The BBQ Cabin

The Daniel Log Cabin has been a consistently popular model for us for a few years now. The quality of this cabin is of a very high standard and the feedback we have had from our customers regarding it has been very positive. One of the most striking danielfeatures of this model is the shape, the pentagonal design of the building is topped off with a very attractive pyramid roof  which includes an overhang on all sides. This is most prominent over the doorway where the corner has been cutaway allowing for a mini porch area over the door itself.  The cladding on the Daniel is 28mm thick conical tongue and groove topped off with 18mm tongue and groove roof boards. There are two opening windows on this cabin which are glazed with real glass, there is also real glass in the door itself. The Daniel is a firm favourite with the staff at Taylors too – we actually have one of these in our garden centre which we use as an office.

The Wolfgang is a striking cabin due to its immense size and the additional side annexe which could be used as a storage shed. The inside of the building is divided by an Wolfgang cabininternal wall and there is a separate single entrance to the storage area, this separate area also features its own window to let in the light. The main part of this cabin is accessible via double doors on the front which is also sheltered via a large integral canopy over the front. The 45mm thick wall logs are manufactured with Norwegian Pine and the roof is 18mm tongue and groove roof boards. We think the separate annexe section on this building is a real selling point which makes this building not only suitable for storage but also as a guest house if relatives come to stay!

The Barbeque Cabin is an outstanding building which, as the name suggests, features a barbeque in its centre. This ingenious idea means that you can have a barbeque all year round whatever the weather in comfort and style. The Scandinavian design of this cabin has a traditional feel to it and the quality timber cladding allows the occupants to remain cool in the summer months and warm in the winter. The extras that come with barbecue cabinthis building are also worthy of a mention,  everything that is pictured inside the cabin on our site is in the price. That includes, but is not limited to, the deerskins, cutlery, cups, clock and of course the barbeque itself. We even include the matches!  The cabin is raised slightly to allow for ventilation which sucks up air from underneath while blowing any smoke from cooking out through the chimney on top. This cabin is also suitable to sleep in as the benches fold out to create sleeping spaces for guests, yet another great idea by the manufacturers. We have always liked the design and look of this building which has always reminded us of a hobbit house and if any of us  decide that we might need extra space in our gardens then this building would be a very strong contender.

One man and his shed: Why the humble garden retreat could help men live longer

It’s long been cherished by men as a refuge to get on with some DIY, tackle a crossword, or even just for some peace and quiet away from the family. But now it would seem the humble garden shed has an even more valuable role – it could actually help men live longer, according to a health expert.

The therapeutic effects of pottering around doing odd jobs relieves stress, which lowers blood pressure, and even boosts self-esteem.

Haven: For many men it’s a welcome retreat, but a health expert believes the garden shed could be a life-saver

Leeds Metropolitan University’s Alan White – the first professor of men’s health – believes the effects could add years to a man’s life. He told the Telegraph: ‘Men find doing things relaxing and that in itself is good for their health. ‘There’s a sense of achievement that men get from starting a task and seeing it through to completion. It’s good for self-esteem.’

Professor White’s research is due to be published in the British Medical Journal .

Health experts are so convinced of the benefits that ‘men’s shed’ groups have sprung up in the UK – a place where men can meet and get on with some DIY. There are already 20 such groups – focusing mainly on the retired – up and down the country.

Pottering about: Men find completing tasks relaxing, which is good for their health, it has been claimed

Professor White believes because men feel so at ease in sheds that they are more likely to listen to home truths about their health. The concept of the sheds scheme came from Australia and it is being backed in this country by the Men’s Health Forum, as well as other voluntary organisations.

Peter Baker, chief executive of the charity, told the Telegraph: ‘I think they’ve caught the men’s imagination. Men like to potter. These are from a generation who, on a Sunday afternoon, like to pull apart a car and put it back together with a Haynes manual. ‘It is hoped the scheme will offer a comfortable environment for men to talk about any health issues they might be having.

Creating more space with a log cabin

Do you often find yourself thinking about the need for extra space, maybe for a growing family, overnight guests, vast amounts of toys or a quite place to work? You may think that moving to a larger house or building a costly extension are the only answers but could a log cabin be what you’re looking for?

Log cabins are manufactured in a range of different log thicknesses and designs and with the right aftercare and maintenance can last for over 20 years. Choosing the right thickness for your cabin is the key; 28 to 44mm logs are ideal if your cabin is to be used during the warmer months as an extra day room, play room or for all year round storage, whilst 58 to 70mm cabins with insulation can be used all year round, 68 – 70mm log cabins can even be used overnight as a guests rooms.

Many log cabins can be delivered and installed within 4 -5 weeks and without the need for planning permission, depending on their height and the proximity of neighbouring boundaries, making them a relativity cheap and quick alternative to a brick built extension. What’s more, you also get the added benefit of no mess in the house while construction is taking place and if you do choose to move in the future, a log cabin can be dismantled and rebuilt at your new property.
